Demand Flock Cameras Off

Denver's Flock cameras photograph 2 million vehicles per month. ICE searched this data over 1,400 times. City Council voted 12-0 to reject the contract. Mayor Johnston bypassed them. Call the mayor's office at (720) 865-9000 and your councilmember. Tell them: turn off the cameras, respect the council vote, and pass a surveillance oversight ordinance.

Push State Legislators on Rent Control

Colorado state law (C.R.S. 38-12-301) bans all local rent control. Denver cannot cap rents until this preemption is lifted. The repeal bill (HB 23-1115) passed the House but died in the Senate by one vote. Contact your state senator and representative. Tell them to repeal the ban or support a ballot initiative. Governor Polis opposes repeal, but a ballot measure goes directly to voters and bypasses his veto.

Demand a State Surveillance Oversight Law

Colorado has no law requiring city council approval before police acquire surveillance technology. California's AB 481 requires legislative body approval for all surveillance acquisitions. Colorado needs the same law. This would have prevented Mayor Johnston from bypassing the council on Flock. Contact your state legislators and demand a Colorado CCOPS (Community Control Over Police Surveillance) bill.

Support Denver Charter Reform

Denver's strong-mayor system lets the mayor veto council legislation with only 4 of 13 votes needed to sustain the veto, sign contracts just under review thresholds, and deploy surveillance without a vote. We need charter amendments to: lower the veto override threshold from 9 to 8 votes, require council approval for all surveillance contracts regardless of dollar amount, lower the $500,000 contract review threshold, and require council confirmation of key cabinet appointments. These changes require a ballot measure. Talk to your neighbors about why Denver's power balance is broken.
